Da Silvano To Be Replaced By New Italian Restaurant

A new restaurant is looking to open in the space previously occupied by Da Silvano, the Village staple that closed last year.

GREENWICH VILLAGE, NY — A new Italian restaurant is looking to replace Da Silvano, the longtime Greenwich Village staple that closed last year after 41 years serving the Village.

The restaurant, run by its famous owner Silvano Marchetto, was as well known for its Italian dishes as its popularity among celebrities and New York's elite. Da Silvano was frequented by stars including Madonna, Tom Hanks and Anna Wintour. Rihanna visited so frequently that she made the restaurant an anniversary video in 2013 and it became a hotspot for tourists hoping to spot a star in the wild.

Marchetto blamed the legendary restaurant's closure on a rent spike in the space. He said last year that it had risen to $42,500-a-month, moving him to close the establishment. Now, a new Italian restaurant is looking to move into the space, which has sat empty for nearly a year. The restaurant's owners — who haven't released a name yet — applied this month for a liquor license with Community Board 2, which covers Greenwich Village.

It's unclear exactly who is opening the new restaurant. The application was filed by an LLC called "Alta Cucina," but multiple calls from Patch to the lawyer listed on the LLC's registration were not returned. The building manager at 260 Sixth Ave. did not immediately respond to a phone message from Patch.

The application describes the planned restaurant as an "upscale Italian restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner," and it's looking to keep late hours at the Sixth Avenue location. Its application said it would be open daily from 8 a.m. until 4 a.m.

Like Da Silvano before it, the new restaurant is planning to include a sidewalk cafe in addition to the first floor and cellar inside the restaurant. The owners of the restaurant signed a 15-year lease with the building's owner for the space, according to the liquor license application.

Patch will update this post if we're able to contact management or owners of the forthcoming restaurant.
