Early Voting Begins In Lower Manhattan/BK Congressional District 10

Here's what voters in the new District 10 — which spans from Greenwich Village to Bay Ridge — need to know.

GREENWICH VILLAGE, NY — Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn residents will head to the polls Saturday for the first round of voting to decide who will represent the new District 10 in the U.S. Congress.

Early voting starts Saturday for New York's Aug. 23 primary elections, which feature races for U.S. Congress and State Senate.

A state court had struck down the new legislative districts this spring, forcing them to be redrawn and causing an unusual second primary, held weeks after the June races for State Assembly and statewide offices.

In Lower Manhattan and across Brooklyn, all eyes are on the competitive race to fill the newly formed empty District-10 congressional seat — which was vacated by longtime incumbent Rep. Jerry Nadler — who chose to run against Rep. Carolyn Maloney to continue representing his longtime home of the Upper West Side.

The new District-10 district includes all of Lower Manhattan under 14th Street, and also encompasses a chunk of Brooklyn, including Park Slope, Sunset Park, Red Hook, and Borough Park.

Here's what to know about the District-10 congressional race.

The Candidates

  • Mondaire Jones
  • Quanda Francis
  • Peter Gleason
  • Daniel Goldman
  • Elizabeth Holtzman
  • Jimmy Jiang Li
  • Maud Maron
  • Yuh-Line Niou
  • Carlina Rivera
  • Brian Robinson
  • Joe Anne Simon
  • Yan Xiong

Former Mayor Bill de Blasio also threw his hat in the ring for the empty congressional seat, but chose to withdraw from the race halfway through July, saying that it was "time for me to leave electoral politics and focus on other ways to serve."

The Front Runners

While there are more than 10 candidates to pick from, polls throughout the campaign process have consistently shown three leading contenders.

  • Assembly Member Yuh-Line Niou
  • Council Member Carlina Rivera
  • Former Assistant U.S. Attorney Dan Goldman

In the most recent data, an internal poll from Goldman's campaign found he was the leading candidate with 18 percent of likely Democratic primary voters' support, with Niou behind him at 16 percent, and Rivera in third with 14 percent.

Goldman is the only leading candidate that hasn't held political office, but he did receive national prominence for his role during the Trump impeachment hearings.

An earlier poll from July 14, however, had Rivera as the leader, with Niou in second, and Goldman in third.

Rivera and Niou both have the advantage of already representing chunks of Lower Manhattan.

Rivera is born and raised on the Lower East Side and represents her home neighborhood along with the East Village, Flatiron, Gramercy Park, Rose Hill, and Murray Hill in the City Council.

Niou has also represented a similar area since 2016, when she was elected to the 65th Assembly District, serving Battery Park City, Chinatown, the Lower East Side, and the South Street Seaport.
