Greenwich Village Is Losing Artists To Cheaper Boroughs, Report Says

Greenwich Village, historically the home of NYC's artist population, is losing thousands of up-and-coming creatives to other boroughs.

GREENWICH VILLAGE, NY — Artists are fleeing Greenwich Village for boroughs and neighborhoods with cheaper rents and more space, according to a recent report analyzing the change in New York City's artist population.

The report, released by the Center for Urban Future, showed an overall increased in artists throughout the city between 2000 and 2015, according to Census data. Even as the city's artist population has grown, Manhattan neighborhoods like Greenwich Village, which have historically been home to generations of important artists during the 20th century, have seen fewer and fewer up-and-comers able to afford skyrocketing rents. Greenwich Village and TriBeCa saw their artist population drop by 24 percent between 2000 and 2015, a staggering drop that occurred even as the city's total population increased. The exodus of artisans from central Manhattan was accompanied by a jump in artist populations in Brooklyn and the Bronx, where young creatives are increasingly moving.
