Greenwich Village's COVID-19 Rate See An Upward Jump: A Breakdown
As the delta variant spreads, coronavirus rates went up in Greenwich Village after hitting record lows. Vaccination rates remain high.

GREENWICH VILLAGE, NY — Coronavirus rates have risen slightly in Greenwich Village in recent weeks, part of a citywide trend that health officials have attributed to the spread of the more contagious Delta variant.
During the week that ended Saturday, the percentage of COVID-19 tests coming back positive for the three ZIP codes that make up Greenwich Village was just over 1 percent. In mid-June, by comparison, the average positive rate was 0.34 percent.
A total of 17 Greenwich Villagers tested positive during that seven-day period, according to city data. The trend represents a change from a few weeks ago, when rates in the neighborhood reached their lowest levels since the pandemic began.

Here's a breakdown of the numbers from July 4 to 10.
- 10014 (West Village/Meatpacking District): 5 people positive from 447 tested. 1.12 percent positivity rate.
- 10012 (Greenwich Village/SoHo): 5 people positive from 456 tested. 1.1 percent positivity rate.
- 10003 (Greenwich Village/East Village): 7 people positive from 862 tested. 0.81 percent positivity rate.
The uptick has been most visible in the city's least vaccinated neighborhoods, including several on Staten Island. The Delta variant, estimated to be 50 percent more contagious than the British Alpha variant, made up 45 percent of new cases confirmed through the end of June, according to the city.

"The spread of the Delta variant means that it is perhaps the most dangerous time to be unvaccinated," Health Commissioner Dr. Dave Chokshi said Monday. "My message is to convey a clear sense of urgency that we have to make sure as many people are as protected as possible in the next few weeks."
Meanwhile, the Greenwich Village remains one of the most vaccinated neighborhoods in the city.
- 10014 (West Village/Meatpacking District): 77 percent first dose received, 72 percent fully vaccinated
- 10012 (Greenwich Village/SoHo): 71 percent first dose received, 66 percent full vaccinated
- 10003 (Greenwich Village/East Village): 70 percent first dose received, 66 percent fully vaccinated
