WEST VILLAGE, NY — The historic Cherry Lane Theatre, the longest-running Off-Broadway theatre in New York City, has a new owner after being sold for $11 million to the Lucille Lortel Theatre Foundation.

The Cherry Lane Theatre is located at 38 Commerce Street in Greenwich Village.

The Lucille Lortel Theatre Foundation, which has its own venue at 121 Christopher Street, was founded to "faithfully preserve the rich history and support the continued prosperity of Off-Broadway," according to its website.

The theatre was purchased from Angelina Fiordellisi, who has served as its executive director since acquiring the building in 1996. During her time in charge, Fiordellisi oversaw a $3 million renovation of its 179-seat mainstage and converted a former storage space into a 50-seat studio theatre.

"It has been a great run," Fiordellisi said in a statement. "To stand on the stage where so many of our greatest artists, crews and theatre providers have stood is to know what theatre history really feels like. I wish every success to my friend and colleague George Forbes and the estimable Lucille Lortel Theatre Foundation as they continue the important work of serving artists and audiences in New York."

Forbes is the executive director of the Lucille Lortel Theatre Foundation.

"The Foundation is excited to expand its footprint and preserve another historic Off-Broadway theatre in Greenwich Village," Forbes said in a statement. "With the addition of two new stages, we look forward to announcing several new programs shortly, serving more artists, companies and audiences."

Earlier this month, the Cherry Lane Theatre opened at full capacity with a production of Jacqueline Novak's "GET ON YOUR KNEES," which is currently running through July 31.
