Morgenstern's Ice Cream Shop To Open In Old Silver Spurs Space

The longtime Greenwich Village diner closed in March after decades in the neighborhood.

GREENWICH VILLAGE, NY — The longtime Greenwich Village diner Silver Spurs will be replaced by the high-end ice cream shop Morgenstern's, according to an application filed with Community Board 2.

The diner, located at 490 La Guardia Place, closed March 29. It first opened in the Village in 1979, and is the latest in a string of greasy spoons to close its doors in New York City. The diner's manager Kiki Bourekas told Jeremiah's Vanishing New York that the diner was closing because of a dip in business.

Now, Morgenstern's is seeking to fill the space. The ice cream shop, which first opened at 2 Rivington St. in 2014, applied for a new liquor license at the La Guardia Place space. Morgenstern's has steadily drawn long lines and dedicated customers in the Lower East Side, thanks to its unique flavors developed in small batches.
