MTA Worker Loses Foot In Greenwich Village Subway Crash

GREENWICH VILLAGE, NY — An MTA worker was badly injured Sunday night when he was hit by a subway train while working in a Greenwich Village tunnel, according to the MTA and the employee's union.

The 26-year-old signal worker was part of a five-person crew that had been sent into a tunnel just north of the 8th Street-NYU station to investigate a reported signal failure. Just before 9 p.m., an uptown Q train hit the worker, seriously injuring him, an MTA spokesperson said.

The worker, who has five years on the job, lost one foot "and his other leg was shattered," a spokesperson for Transport Workers Union Local 100 told Patch. The crash was first reported by AMNY.

The train stopped at the scene and the injured worker's colleagues shut off power to the tracks. The victim was rushed to Bellevue Hospital.

"This tragic accident is under investigation, but it highlights just how dangerous this job can be," said John V. Chiarello, TWU Local 100's vice president for maintenance of way, in a statement. "Transit workers are out on the system 24 hours a day, seven days a week, making repairs and inspections to keep NY moving."

Service along the N-Q-R line was disrupted Sunday night following the accident.
