Thief Swipes Phone From Straphanger In The West Village

WEST VILLAGE, NY — A thief swiped a cellphone from a man as he was waiting for a subway in the West Village police said.

The thief was at the West Fourth Street subway station on Feb. 19 when he approached the victim and grabbed his cellphone from his hand, according to police. The thief then boarded a northbound train as the victim chased after him onto the train, authorities said.

The thief got off at the next station and ran from the area. Grainy surveillance footage shows the victim angrily chasing the thief as he leaves the station.

Police released surveillance photos of the man on Tuesday and are working to locate him.
