West Vil Venue Le Poisson Rouge Pays Its Rent: Analysis

The red fish could soon be back in the black.

WEST VILLAGE — The Red Fish could soon be back in the black, a new financial analysis shows.

Le Poisson Rouge, the beloved West Village music venue at 158 Bleecker St., has started paying rent again after a COVID 19 shutdown and a year without paying the landlord, according to a Fitch Ratings analysis.

"The tenant has resumed rent payments," the analysis states, "and is in discussion with the the [sic] receiver on a lease extension and settling outstanding balances."

Le Poisson Rouge reopened in August 2021 amid an eviction moratorium, which ended in January, enacted by New York State.

The famous cabaret — which has hosted performers such as Christina Aguilera, Erykah Badu, Florence & The Machine, Jeff Goldblum and Yoko Ono — didn't pay rent for a year, the analysis states.

Crain's New York Business, first to report the West Village landlord's lucky day, was not able to reach Le Poisson Rouge for comment or details on the back rent owed.

But the business journal noted the payments represent a positive sign for the return of New York City's nightlife sector, still recovering from the pandemic.
