West Village Gains New Car-Share Spots In Expansion Of DOT Program

The Department of Transportation recently installed 270 new carshare parking spaces across the city, include four in the West Village.

WEST VILLAGE, NY — Four parking spots around the West Village are now reserved for private companies operating car-share programs, the city's Department of Transportation announced Wednesday.

The expansion is a small part of the 270 new curbside car-share parking spots across the city, the DOT said.

“Convenient access to carshare is a proven way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and remove more vehicles from our streets,” said DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez. “Doubling the size of this program will make curbside carshare accessible in more neighborhoods, save people money, and build upon the success of our successful pilot program.”

The department claims that a pilot program initiated in 2018, which handed over 230 parking spots to private car-share companies, resulted in reduced emissions and car usage overall.

According to DOT surveys, over 1,000 users of the car-share either sold their privately owned car or abandoned plans to purchase one, instead opting to use Zipcar, Getaround, and Truqit vehicles for quick trips, with parking spots set on non-metered, curbside lanes.

The agency also said that emissions dropped seven percent.

In the West Village, three of the new spots will be operated by Getaround and one by Zipcar.

The four spots are:

  • 202 Spring St. (Getaround)
  • 512 Greenwich St. (Getaround)
  • 29 Bedford St. (Getaround)
  • 32 Washington Square West (Zipcar)
