Cops: Abandoned Vehicle At Macy's Turns Out To Be Stolen

Also, a Hampton Bays man says his credit card number was stolen and used to make purchases in Manhattan.

Southampton Town police released the following incident reports for the week of Oct. 28:

Speonk

  • A Speonk woman called 911 on Oct. 24 to report that sometime over the last three weeks someone had stolen the license plates off her 1997 Mazda while it was parked at the Speonk Long Island Rail Road station. Police found that whoever stole the plates replaced the rear plate with another tag registered to a Ford Explorer owned by a Hampton Bays resident. The Hampton Bays plate had not been reported stolen.

  • On Oct. 23 police discovered an abandoned vehicle on Montauk Highway that turned out to be stolen. According to police, a 2001 Jeep Cherokee had been left at the intersection of Montauk and the entrance to the Macy’s parking lot at around 11:15 p.m. When the officer traced the license plate back he discovered that the vehicle was reported stolen. The victim said the Jeep must have been taken sometime between 9 a.m. and when police discovered it that day.
  • A Hampton Bays man went to Southampton Town Police headquarters on Oct. 22 to report that someone had used his identity and credit card information to make purchases at a New York City Apple store the day before. The victim said he had his Bridgehampton National Bank MasterCard in his possession when the two fraudulent charges were made. The two charges totaled $966.81. The victim canceled his card and detectives are investigating the identity theft.

East Quogue

  • Someone broke into a house on Bay Avenue and vandalized it with graffiti sometime last week. Police received a call from the victim on Oct. 22, who said that no one had been to the house since the lawn was mowed on Oct. 14. The victim said whoever broke also ripped out an air vent before removing a door that led to an attached garage and then putting more graffiti on the exterior of the house.
