Cops: Burglar Grabs 19K In Jewelry From East Quogue Home

The following police incidents were reported this week by the Southampton Town Police Department west of the Shinnecock Canal.

East Quogue

• Someone broke into a home on Blue Jay Way sometime between Sept. 3 and Sept. 7 and stole $19,000 worth of jewelry by entering through an unlocked slider door that led to the victim’s bedroom. According to police, the victim noticed the missing jewelry and called 911 on Sept. 12. Stolen was a Cartier 24-karat watch valued at $10,000, a V-style gold necklace worth $3,000, a matching bracelet to that necklace, valued at $2,000, a link-style gold necklace worth $2,000 and a necklace with stones, valued at $2,000. Extra patrols were called into the area. There are no suspects at this time and the investigation is ongoing.
• Someone stole the identity of an East Quogue man and used his Visa card to make purchases at a Best Buy in Minnesota on Sept. 19. According to police, the man was contacted by his credit card company to confirm the $1,444.74 purchase, which he denied. He has since cancelled the card and filed a report on Sept. 19 to document the incident for reimbursement purposes.

• Another air conditioning unit was stolen in Westhampton, this time from someone’s property on Jagger Lane. On Sept. 22, a resident on the street called 911 to report that sometime between Sept. 12 and that morning, someone stole their Lennox brand unit.
• A woman on Hollow Lane reported her 2013 Hyndai Elantra was stolen out of her driveway at an unknown time on or around Sept. 7. The woman filed a report on Sept. 22.
• Someone stole $3,500 worth of copper driveway lights from a home on South Country Road in Westhampton sometime between Sept 8 and Sept. 21. The victim called police after discovering the lights were missing.
• Someone stole $5,000 worth of construction materials slated to be used on the roof of a Catholic Church on Main Street on Sept. 18. According to police, the JP Hunter Company was storing the roofing materials in back of the church and the construction project had been going on since the beginning of summer without incident. However when they showed up on the job site on Sept. 19 at around 7 a.m. they discovered that the Spanish-style clay roofing tiles were missing. No security system was in place and the motion sensors were not working at the suspected time of the theft.

Riverside

• On the night of Sept. 17 someone broke into a vehicle that was parked in the driveway of a home on Brown Street and stole more than $1,600 worth of valuables. According to the report, the victim claims she heard a dog barking at around 3 a.m. An Alpine amp, worth $200, a speaker box, worth $800, a CD/DVD deck, worth $400, a CD/mp3 deck, worth $200 and a 10-speed bike, worth $50, were reported stolen.

Flanders

• On Sept. 17 a Flanders woman received a phone call from a man on a restricted line claiming that her husband was in a car accident with the caller’s brother and that the brother had a gun to her husband’s head. The brother was threatening to kill him if money wasn’t wired to them via Western Union. Meanwhile, the woman’s 10-year-old daughter called her father from their home on Meadowbrook Lane and left a message. The woman’s husband called back moments later and reported he was safe and sound. The woman hung up on the attempted scam and called 911 at around 4 p.m. The incident is in line with similar phone scams that were reported on the East End this summer.
• Someone broke into a man’s car on Arthur Street sometime during the night of Sept. 13 and stole more than $800 in valuables, including savings bonds, a U.S. passport and a body board. The case is active pending investigation. The victim plans to cancel the bond with the issuing bank and will call police back once he determines the real value of the stolen bond.
• A Flanders man called 911 after he was attacked by another man wielding two knives, one in each hand, on Sept. 20. According to police the suspect, whom the complainant was able to identify, jumped out of a green Jeep at around 3:30 p.m. on Cypress Avenue and started swinging the knives at the victim, attempting to cut him. The victim was able to get away, unharmed and call police. The victim said he was targeted in the attack because of an ongoing dispute between the suspect and himself as well as other residents on the block. The investigation is ongoing. No arrests have been made.
• Someone broke into a woman’s vehicle and stole her purse containing cash and her identification on Sept. 14. According to police the woman said she left her purse locked in her 2007 Infinity on Flanders Road at around 12:30 p.m. but when she returned she noticed someone had broken the passenger side window and her purse was gone. Police searched the area but came up empty.
