Crimes Nearby: Drunk Man Charged With Stealing Cop's Keys

The following information was supplied by various town police departments. A criminal charge is only an accusation and does not indicate guilt.

Riverhead

• Riverhead Town Police arrested three individuals on Saturday night after setting up two Stop-DWI sobriety checkpoints on Roanoake Avenue, north of Northville Turnpike and on Peconic Avenue.

Riverhead resident S. Martinez-Velasquez, 47, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, and Gavin K. Glimm, 44, of Hampton Bays was also arrested and charged with DWI.

Police also Virgil Horsley, Jr., 25 of Riverhead and charged him with driving while ability impaired by drugs. 

Southampton

• Santiago B. Moreno, 20, of Riverhead, was arrested June 14 at 3:57 p.m. and charged with petty larceny, a misdemeanor, at the Bridgehampton Commons, where he worked at a store as a cashier. Police said Moreno was arrested after being questioned regarding reward cards that he was keeping and spending rather than giving to customers who spent $50. Additionally, he confessed to the store’s loss prevention team that he stole a Valentine’s toy on Valentine’s Day and put a clearance sticker on a video game that was full price, according to the arrest report.  He was released on a field appearance ticket.

• Veronica C. Lopez, 19, of Riverhead, was arrested June 14 at 3:57 p.m. at the Bridgehampton Commons and charged with petty larceny. Police said Lopez was questioned by a store’s loss prevention team about several $5 rewards cards she redeemed that should have been given to customers who spent $50. Lopez confessed to keeping and redeeming 10 cards, according to the arrest report.

• Kevin Sebestian Street, 47, of Bridgehampton, was arrested July 28 at 8:02 p.m. on Sag Harbor Turnpike in Bridgehampton and charged with obstructing governmental administration in the second degree, a misdemeanor, and disorderly conduct, a violation. Police said Street was a passenger in a vehicle that police pulled over and he interfered by refusing to stay in the vehicle and walking around, obstructing traffic.

East Hampton

• Gary D. Rea, 44, of East Hampton, was held without bail following his arrest on a felony driving while intoxicated charge on June 26. Rea, who was previously convicted of a DWI within the past 10 years, was pulled over on Three Mile Harbor Road, near Copeces Lane, at about 12:15 a.m., when police said they saw him swerve in a 1999 Ford. His car was impounded due to the prior conviction in 2005.

• Seth H. Grossman, 44, of New York City, NY, was arrested on a misdemeanor DWI charge on June 27 in Amagansett. Police said they saw him make an illegal U-turn from the westbound shoulder of Montauk Highway into the eastbound lane. "The vehicle hen accelerated to a speed of 60mph verified by the spedometer" on the police unit, police said in the arrest report. Near Bunker Hill Road, the vehicle began to swerve, according to police, and police pulled him over near Cranberry Hole Road, at about 1:30 a.m. He was released later that morning on $400 bail.

• Michael A. Abbate, 33, of New York City, was arrested June 24 at 2:58 a.m. on the Long Wharf and charged with aggravated DWI, a misdemeanor. Police said Abbate sped onto the Long Wharf while tailgating another vehicle, then backed up unsafely into a parking space. According to the arrest report, while a police officer was interviewing a different driver, Abbate walked up and started speaking to them both. That's when the officer ascertained Abbate was drunk, police said. Abbate performed poorly on sobriety tests and failed a prescreen breath test, according to the arrest report. He was held overnight for morning arraignment. He was additionally charged with speeding, backing up unsafely and following to close.

North Fork

• Joseph P. Ricketts, 48, of Franklin Square was charged with criminal possession of stolen property and petit larceny on June 2 at 10:15 p.m., after he took keys of a police officer’s personal vehicle while being transported home, police said. Police transported Ricketts, who was intoxicated, to his residence on Bray Avenue in Laurel, when a few hours later, at tour change, one of the officers was unable to locate the keys to his personal vehicle. That officer responded to Ricketts’ residence to interview him, and it was revealed that Ricketts stole the keys from a police bag and had them, police said. Ricketts was arrested and held overnight.

• Michael Gress, 48, of North Salem, was charged with boating while intoxicated on June 29 at 2:25 p.m. after he ran aground near a beach in East Marion, police said. Gress was operating his vessel in a southerly direction on autopilot when he ran aground, police said. Upon arrival undersigned officer found Gress to be intoxicated. He was placed under arrest and transported to police headquarters for processing and held for arraignment in Southold Town Justice court.
