Severe Thunderstorm Warning Issued For Nassau County

Update 2:25 p.m.- A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect until 3 p.m for a portion of Nassau County.


LONG ISLAND, NY — The National Weather Service is warning of the potential for severe storms Saturday in a special weather statement issued for the island.

A cold front moving across the region Saturday afternoon will be accompanied by a line of showers and thunderstorms. This line should develop over western portions of New Jersey and the lower Hudson Valley after midday and sweep across the rest of the area during the afternoon, moving across northeastern New Jersey and the rest of the lower Hudson Valley before 2 p.m, New York City and vicinity between 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., western Long Island from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and eastern Long Island from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Wind gusts of 40-50 mph, brief heavy rain of a quarter to a half-inch and small hail are possible. The strongest thunderstorms could produce damaging wind gusts over 60 mph and hail close to an inch in diameter. Some downed trees, limbs, and power lines may occur.

Severe thunderstorm watches and warnings may be a possibility for the afternoon as the situation unfolds, the weather service says.

The full forecast:

Saturday- A chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 3pm. Some of the storms could produce small hail, gusty winds, and heavy rain. Temperature falling to around 55 by 5pm. Windy, with a southeast wind 11 to 16 mph becoming west 23 to 28 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Saturday Night- Mostly clear, with a low around 37. Breezy, with a west wind 14 to 23 mph.

Sunday- Mostly sunny, with a high near 51. West wind 7 to 9 mph.

Sunday Night- A 40 percent chance of showers, mainly after 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 40. Southwest wind around 8 mph.

Monday- A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly before 10am. Partly sunny, with a high near 48. Breezy, with a west wind 7 to 12 mph increasing to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 31 mph.

Monday Night- Mostly clear, with a low around 36.

Tuesday- Sunny, with a high near 50.

Tuesday Night- Partly cloudy, with a low around 40.

Wednesday- Partly sunny, with a high near 60.
