Superintendent: Redistricting Letters Will Be Delivered End of April

Revised district elementary boundary map will be posted on district website on Saturday, April 28.

Letters outlining the West Islip School District's revised boundary map for elementary students will be mailed home next week, Superintendent Rick Simon announced.

"We're in the process of finalizing the letters to our incoming kindergarten through fifth graders with their school assignments for next year," Simon said at Thursday's Board of Education meeting.

Parents of students currently enrolled in and schools will receive the new school assignements after they are mailed out on Friday, April 28, Simon said.

In addition, a map of the new boundaries will be posted on the district's website on Saturday.

The update in district boundaries are a result of the Board of Education's , Kirdahy and Westbrook, in an effort to save approximately $3.2 million.

According to Simon, the final estimated enrollment in each elementary school for the 2012-13 year is as follows:

  • Bayview- 483
  • Bellew- 518
  • Oquenock- 503
  • Manetuck- 590

Simon acknowledged that class sizes were a top priority throughout the transition process, but said he felt comfortable with the distribution.

"We think we got a very good number in terms of how enrollments are looking [for next year]," he said. "We feel we have excellent class sizes."

Projected average of students per section per grade for next year:

  • Kindergarten-19.6 students
  • First grade- 22.1 students
  • Second grade- 20.8 students
  • Third grade- 21 students
  • Fourth grade- 21.1 students
  • Fifth grade- 23.1 students

Parents are encouraged to contact their school's principal with any questions regarding the new district boundaries or enrollment.

Simon also mentioned that parents will be informed of transition activities for students who are moving schools which will take place starting in May and lasting through the summer and fall.
