A local emergency order took effect Friday afternoon as officials warned of hazardous travel conditions and potential road closures.

ISLIP, NY — Town of Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter declared a local state of emergency Friday afternoon on the official Town website ahead of a severe winter storm expected to bring hazardous conditions across the town.

The emergency declaration, issued at 3 p.m. Friday, cites forecasted heavy snow, ice, and other severe weather conditions that officials said pose an imminent threat to public safety and property. The order warns of potential road closures, travel disruptions, power outages, and damage to public and private infrastructure.

Under the emergency order, town departments — including Emergency Management, Public Works, Parks, Aviation and Transportation, and Public Safety — have been directed to take all necessary steps to protect residents and respond to storm-related conditions, officials said.

As part of the declaration, street parking is prohibited throughout the Town of Islip during the snow-related emergency, according to town code. Officials warned that vehicles left parked on roadways create a danger for plow operators and may be damaged or removed as snow-clearing operations are carried out.

Town officials urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and to comply with parking restrictions to allow crews to clear roads safely and efficiently.
