West Islip Student Approached By Stranger

Female high school student said she was followed, knocked down by a man driving a green station wagon.

Suffolk County police are investigating the report of a female student who said she was approached and knocked down by a male driver of a green station wagon who attempted to assault her as she walked home from last week.

The incident reportedly took place near Everdell Avenue at approximately 8:15 p.m. on Monday, March 19.

According to an alert posted on the West Islip School District website, the victim noticed a green vehicle, possibly a Ford Taurus, following her. The car eventually stopped and pulled over to the side of the road. As the victim continued walking, a man reportedly jumped out of nearby bushes and knocked her to the ground, attempting to assault her. The victim was able to escape and ran home.

School officials were notified of the incident two days later, according to the district. A subsequent police report was filed.

The victim described the suspect as an overweight man between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 10 inches, weighing approximately 180 pounds and wearing a black/blue hooded sweatshirt at the time of the incident.

In the statement posted on the school district's website, Superintendent Richard Simon outlined safety guidelines and encouraged parents to discuss them with their kids.

"While it is certainly inappropriate to foster a sense of insecurity for our children, it is imperative that we provide them with the information and support needed to handle any potentially dangerous situation," Simon stated. "Following and reinforcing the guidelines set forth will help promote a safer community for all."
