An Evergreen Street homeowner reported to police on Thursday at 5:47 a.m. that a black bear was going through the backyard. It was then seen running to the woods and heading towards Somers, police said.
"They travel pretty quickly," Yorktown Police Lt. Kevin Soravilla said. "It's usually young males trying to establish their own territory."
Last week, a black bear was also seen walking towards the Lake Purdy's area and Lt. Soravilla said it might even me the same one.
Police advise residents to take precautions and if they see a bear, they should leave it alone.
"It won't bother you unless you corner it," Lt. Soravilla said. "Leave them alone."
