Capt. Kenneth Sgroi Memorial Highway Becoming Reality In Yorktown

YORKTOWN, NY — Crompond Road between Elizabeth and Baldwin roads in Yorktown will now be known as Captain Kenneth Sgroi Memorial Highway.

New York State Assemblymember Matt Slater and Senator Pete Harckham announced Tuesday that their bill naming a portion of Route 202 after him has been signed into law by Gov. Kathy Hochul.

Sgroi, a lieutenant in the Yorktown Police Department, was only 37 years old when an abrupt illness took his life in January 2023. He was promoted posthumously to the rank of captain in honor of his dedication and service to the department.

“I appreciate Governor Hochul signing this legislation, which I hope will inspire all who travel the Captain Kenneth Sgroi Memorial Highway to follow in the footsteps of a great person, loving father and excellent police officer,” said Slater. “It was an absolute honor to know Captain Sgroi, be able to promote him to Lieutenant during my tenure as Town Supervisor and see his dedication to our community firsthand. With this memorial highway, he will always be a part of Yorktown.”

A Yorktown Heights resident who was raised in Mineola, New York, Sgroi distinguished himself in his profession with his sincere dedication and substantial contributions to the welfare of his community, which included regular participation in local charitable and civic endeavors.

“Captain Kenneth Sgroi was an exemplary law enforcement officer, and I was deeply saddened by his loss,” said Harckham. “I thank Governor Hochul for enacting the legislation and Assemblymember Slater for his work in getting the bill passed in the State Legislature. Our law enforcement professionals rarely get the recognition and praise they deserve, but with this new law we will honor Captain Sgroi’s memory, kindness and tremendous service.”

As a patrol officer with the YPD, Sgroi was the first-place recipient of the Stop DWI Award for the Town of Yorktown in 2010 and 2012. In 2013, he received a certificate of commendation for his excellent work at the YPD, and he also became a certified field training officer and a desk officer.

In 2016, Sgroi was promoted to the rank of sergeant and assigned to a patrol squad to supervise as a patrol supervisor. Additionally, Sgroi managed the Yorktown Police Department Field Training Program, and was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in July 2022, where he was assigned as the staff division commander.

“Kenny loved Yorktown. He purchased a house and intended to raise his young family in the town that he took an oath to protect and serve," Yorktown Police Chief Robert Noble said. "That his legacy will live on by naming this section of Route 202, the section he drove each day to and from work each day, is quite meaningful to all of us at YPD. We love and miss him, but his contributions to our community will never be forgotten. I give so much thanks to Assemblyman Slater and Sen. Harckham for making this happen.”
