
There are tons of ways to keep busy around Yorktown and Somers this weekend, and we're here to help you decide which happenings are for you. Here are the details for several great events.
Yorktown: Run Away From Zombies to Benefit Special Olympics
Special Olympics organizers have found a fun and exciting way –just in time for Halloween – to raise money for its programs by holding a 5K 'rUNDEAD' race. Participants will have the chance to escape from the "zombie apocalypse" on Sunday, Oct. 20 at Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park in Yorktown.Runners will start off with a flag belt and three flags representing their lifelines. Zombies will be stationed throughout the course attempting to take the flags one at a time. Once a runner loses all three flags, they are "dead" and the zombies have won. While the runner can still finish the race, they will not be eligible for awards. Volunteers are needed. More details here.
Yorktown: Comedy Night to Benefit Schools
The Foundation for Excellence in Yorktown Education invites you to a Comedy Night to benefit the Yorktown School District. Tickets are $75 each or $140 for 2. This includes cocktails, appetizers and dinner, a three-comedian show and door prizes. There will also be raffle Prizes. The comedians are Joe Narvaez, Janice Messite and Joey Gay, who was a finalist on NBC's Last Comic Standing. Members of the Yorktown High School Music Boosters will host their seventh annual tag sale, which will be held within the Yorktown High School cafeteria on Saturday, Oct. 19 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m, and they are inviting community members to participate. The money they raise will be used to help defray the cost of the Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, and Orchestra's participation in regional music festivals.Yorktown: Family Fun Day at Lakeland
Join the Lakeland Education Foundation's 2nd Annual Family Fun Day on Saturday, Oct. 19 from noon to 4 p.m. Enjoy great food, funflatables and lots of vendors. There will be live music by The Unfunded Mandate Band, cheerleaders, zumba and much more. All proceeds from the event will benefit all the students of the Lakeland Central School District.Yorktown: Taconic Opera to Debut Norma
Opening its 16th season in Westchester, Taconic Opera will debut Bellini’s famous masterpiece, Norma, in Yorktown and White Plains on Sunday, Oct. 20. The title role has been sung by almost every famous soprano in the world during the past 180 years, and it was Maria Callas’ signature role. Soprano Francesca Mondanaro plays the role of Norma. Somers: Harvest Festival and Super Tag Sale
Saint Luke Church's Harvest Festival and Super Tag Sale will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19 in Somers. There will be vendors, a tag sale, raffles, children's activities, pumpkins and more. The events will be held in Bailey Park, located on the corner of Routes 100 and 202 in the center of Somers.Somers: Voice Actor Alan Sklar to Give Reading at Library
Acclaimed voice actor Alan Sklar will give a live reading of his favorite short story by Ernest Hemingway called 'The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber' at the Somers Library on Friday, Oct. 18 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.Somers: Halloween Exhibit and Train Show at Lasdon Park
The exhibit and train show will be open this weekend – Oct. 19 and Oct. 20 – from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The main house and the grounds are decorated for Halloween with various ghosts, spooky tricks and an assortment of surprises. The main house has a large model Lionel train layout in the main room, and the library has a small children’s layout where children are able to operate trains. More details here.__
