Our student writer talked about his "opportunity of a lifetime" experience at the Washington Journalism and Media Conference in Fairfax, VA. Over the course of five days he met new friends, was mentored by professionals in the media and participated in a mock press conference.
Tuesday, June 6The heat wave had many people searching for ways to stay cool and we Yorktown residents gave tips on how to beat the heat. A Yorktown man was arrested for driving while his two children were in the car with him. We had coverage of the girls' field hockey game where Lakeland prevailed over Yorktown.

Temperatures were still in the 100s and we had tips on how to protect yourself from the heat. We also asked some residents and local bikers how they were dealing with the heat. We told you about a man who was arrested for leaving his dog in a 140-degree car on Monday, which died after suffocating to death. A fire destroyed a single-family house in Cortlandt Manor and caused four firefighters to suffer from heat exhaustion. There was a massive fire in White Plains, too, which injured 27 people and destroyed six businesses.
Thursday, June 8The Yorktown Central School District held a reorganizational board of education meeting where they discussed matters for the upcoming school year. Vets gave advice on how to take care of your pets during the summer and trainers at Guiding Eyes for the Blind talked about what they did differently with their dogs during the extreme heat. We had an update on two court cases–the man and woman who were accused of engaging in sexual contact with a minor and the armed robber who stole $15,000 from a jewelry store.

Police had arrested a Dunkin' Donuts employee, for stealing nearly $10,000 from the store, and we had the story and picture of the woman. Read the police blotter for the week about a scooter running into a car, a woman charged with DWI and two stolen identities. The Jefferson Valley mall never opened in the morning due to loss of power and officials said it reopened later in the evening. We gave you a report of what happened at Tuesday's town board meeting.
Saturday, June 10Yorktown baseball team Southside Inn took home the 10-5 victory against Tool Academy. We had pictures and video from the launch party of "Single and Smart" magazine designed for singles in Westchester. Two "powerhouses" faced off at Hudson Valley Summer Field Hockey League. There the Lakeland's girls field hockey team prevailed over Mamaroneck in a 2-0 victory, and we had the story.
Police sent a press release about a 16-year-old Yorktown kid who hacked into his school's computer system. The Lakeland school district administration held its board of education reorganization meeting during the week–they discussed the budget and a donation to be used toward field maintenance.
