Five Yorktown Volunteer EMTs Receive Lifesaving Awards

Several Yorktown emergency responders received the Lifesaving Awards from Westchester County last month during 40th annual EMS Awards Ceremony at Sleepy Hollow High School.

Yorktown Ambulance Volunteer Corps emergency medical technicians (EMTs) Charles Kircher, Robert Flavin, Henry Lang Jr., Thomas Kearin and Roland Faucher were among more than 200 EMS providers and their families who celebrated the presentation of the annual awards and the conferral of lifesaving citations.

Kircher, Flavin and Kearin were honored for their efforts with Yorktown Empress medics Ned Steinkraus and Lisa Sillins. The team responded to a 911 EMS call for a cancer patient who lost consciousness during chemotherapy and suffered cardiac arrest as they were arriving at the scene. They immediately began chest compressions and began breathing support for the patient.

They were able to establish a secure airway and administer medication to help restarts the woman's heart before delivering her to the hospital for continuing treatment.

"Their efforts were a key factor that enabled the patient’s subsequent recovery and return to normal life," YVAC Captain Richard Cariello told Patch.

In the second case, volunteer members Roland Faucher and Henry Lang Jr. together with Yorktown paramedics Ned Steinkraus and Christiana Corrado responded to a 911 call for a person with difficulty breathing and not feeling well.

When they arrived at the scene, they found good samaritans were performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the man. The EMS team established a secure airway and administered medication to help restart the patient’s heart before delivering him to the hospital for continuing treatment.

"In both of these cases the teams efforts were a key factor that enabled the patient’s subsequent recovery and return to normal life," Cariello said.
