'Golden Apple Bike' Tour to Kick off in Somers on Sept. 1

Cycling enthusiasts can enjoy a day of care-free biking along scenic Northern Westchester roads on Sunday, Sept. 1 for the 32nd annual Golden Apple Bike Tour, which kicks off at Best Plumbing, Tile & Stone on Route 138 in Somers.

Cyclists can choose from different routes (25, 50, 75, or 100-mile routes) and finish at their own pace before the 5 p.m. end-time. Those looking for a challenge, can participate in the Hill Climb Time Trial or the Dirty Apple, a gravel/dirt road Metric Century. 

The Golden Apple Bike Tour is organized by the non-profit organization Westchester Cycle Club with its board member Kate Marshall heading the event. 

"All our routes are designed with safety in mind, and we have tried to use roads that take riders along our scenic reservoirs, through our friendly towns and villages and into our cherished parks," Marshall told Patch.

On Sunday, participants can park at the Golden's Bridge Metro North Station and check in from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Riders can start when they are ready, but time it to get back between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. when volunteers from the Westchester Cycle Club will serve lunch, including sandwiches, salads, homemade gelato. There will also be music, vendors and massages. 

The event will raise money for a charity to be determined by the Westchester Cycle Club during its annual meeting in December. 

"While [The Golden Apple Bike Tour] has changed and grown over that time, we have always focused on creating a ride that is safe and fun for everyone," Marshall said. "It's not very easy to please all cyclists, but we try."
