Marisa Braterg and Tommy Jagemann have been in the deli business since they were still in high school. Braterg's father owned a deli in Hawthorne, which Jagemann eventually took over.
More than two decades later, they've taken on a new adventure together after seizing what Jagemann, a North Salem resident, calls a "good opportunity" by opening a business in the area. They've opened Lakeland Deli, located on East Main Street in Shrub Oak.
"I liked that it was gutted out so we could build the way we want it," Jagemann said.
Everything is the store – from floor to ceiling – is brand new. Jagemann's nephew Justin helped by doing all of the countertops and custom built shelves himself.
Lakeland Deli serves homemade salads, provides hot food catering, different specials every day, carries Board's Head cold cuts only, and has a make-your-own-salad bar.
The specialty sandwiches have been the most popular items among Lakeland High School students since the deli opened earlier this month, Braterg said. The most popular one has been Awesome Ash (chicken cutlet, cheddar cheese, ranch dressing and hot sauce), which was named after Jagemann's daughter Ashley. A breakfast sandwich has also been named after his other daughter Samantha –Sloppy Sam (doubled egg, chili, hash browns and cheddar cheese).
Because of all the school spirit, the high school and the school district administrative offices being right down the street, Braterg and Jagemann decided to make the colors of their business green and yellow – Lakeland's school colors.
"We are very excited to be here," Jagemann said. "It's a new adventure for us. Everyone has been receptive, especially the kids [at Lakeland]– the most polite, respectful kids."
Of Lakeland Deli's cook Sergio Del Rosario, Jagemann said "he can cook anything." He described his deli as professional, classy, family oriented and personable.
At the end of the summer, Lakeland Deli is expected to sell cider donoughts, which Jagemann would make himself.
