Lakeland teachers, administrators and parents were among the recent recipients of more than $51,000 in grants awarded by the Lakeland Education Foundation.
The LEF presented the Board of Education the check to fund 19 different grants during the May 16 board meeting held at Van Cortlandtville Elementary school.
Created in 1994, the Foundation has now awarded more than $500,000 in grants to help enhance the educational experience of students in the district. This year's grants included a number of innovative projects and proposals.
Thomas Jefferson, Van Cortlandtville and George Washington elementary schools received $6,000 each to enhance the great work they have already been implementing with the use of iPads.
Lakeland Copper Beech Middle School Assistant Principal Chris Cummings was awarded funds to increase communication and develop its very own news station.
In a grant submitted by parent Amy Kenny and Principal Karen Gagliardi, Thomas Jefferson Elementary School received a grant to help build an after-school theater program at the school.
Other grants ranged from physical education equipment and multi cultural musical instruments to interactive math notebooks and airbrushing equipment.
"This was a busy and very successful year and it feels good to keep writing bigger and better checks each year," said Mike Daly, LEF treasurer. "These funds will impact our schools and almost every student in the Lakeland School District."
The Foundation's final fundraiser for the year will be a June 20 Happy Hour at the Cove in Peekskill with the Foundation's very own in-house band - Unfunded Mandate. The music will run from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. All are welcome and a portion of the proceeds will be donated back to the foundation.
