From Westchester County Parks:

Do you know whether your garden soil is acidic, alkaline or basic? Just like different types of light exposure can determine which plants thrive in your home garden, so does the pH of your soil.

Find out about the importance of this testing on Sunday, April 7, at Lasdon Park, Arboretum and Veterans Memorial in Somers.

From 1 to 2 p.m., horticulturist Tolly Beck will demonstrate how to test determine the texture and acidity of your soil. A soil test will enable you to adjust your soil's pH level and determine whether it's neutral, alkaline or acidic. She’ll offer ways in which you can amend your soil by either adding lime or sulfur to create a more basic or neutral mix that is preferred by most plants.

Participants are welcome to bring one-half cup of damp soil from their gardens in a plastic bag for testing. Reservations are required for this program by calling (914) 864-7264.
