Memorial Day Services in Yorktown

Events planned for the Memorial Day weekend to honor the fallen men and women who fought to protect out freedom.

Although Memorial Day is when people take time to relax and celebrate summer's arrival, its true purpose is to honor the fallen men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom.

Memorial Day Service

To commemorate the day, the Lake Mohegan Lake Fire Department's annual Memorial Day service will be held on Monday, May 28 at 10 a.m. at the Shrub Oak Honor Roll on East Main Street (adjacent to the ).

Memorial Day Parade

Yorktown's annual Memorial Day Parade will begin at 11 a.m. at Yorktown Town Hall before the parade leads followers down to the gazebo behind the . Hundreds of patriots, veterans and town officials will congregate to commemorate the U.S. service members who died fighting for our country.

Service at Civil War Veterans' Graves

Prior to the Monday events, the Yorktown American Legion, Boy and Girl Scouts, as well as Civil War re-enactors will conduct a memorial ceremony at two recently discovered Civil War veterans' graves in the Shrub Oak United Methodist cemetery on Saturday, May 26 at 11 a.m.

Pvt. Albert Sillick fell at the second Battle of Bull Run on Aug. 30, 1862 and Thomas Wildey fell at the Battle of Hanover Court House on May 27, 1862. This ceremony will be followed by the decoration of all known veterans graves in the cemetery with American flags.
