Murder-Suicide In Hudson Valley: Investigation Ongoing

Police said Dr. Krystal Cascetta went into her infant's room Saturday morning and fatally shot the child before turning the gun on herself.

SOMERS, NY — Police continue to investigate an apparent murder-suicide involving a renowned physician in Somers Saturday.

The New York State Police said Dr. Krystal Cascetta went into her infant’s room around 7 a.m. Saturday and fatally shot the child. She then turned the gun on herself.

Law enforcement said the scene was consistent with a murder-suicide.

Family members at the home spoke with CBS News and said it was a “true tragedy” and that Cascetta was a “wonderful person.”

Police have not released the age or gender of the child.

Cascetta was a noted oncologist for Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.

In response to a request for a statement, Mount Sinai Health System said, “The Mount Sinai community is greatly saddened by the tragic loss of a Mount Sinai Health System doctor and her child. We extend our deepest sympathies to Dr. Cascetta's family, friends, colleagues,and patients.”

On X, formerly known as Twitter, Dr. David L. Reich, president of Mount Sinai Hospital and Mount Sinai Queens, tweeted that everyone at Mount Sinai is devastated by her tragic loss.

“Dr. Krystal Cascetta was beloved by her patients and colleagues,” he tweeted.

Cascetta was an assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, according to her bio on the hospital’s website.

Her clinical focus included the treatment of breast cancer, gynecologic cancer, sarcoma and gastrointestinal cancers.

Cascetta was an active investigator of breast cancer clinical trials.
