Revised Trash Collection; Lakeland's 'Elementary Math Night;' Somers Reading

Monday, Oct. 14

• Yorktown, Lakeland and Somers schools are closed on Columbus Day.

• Town offices will also be closed for the holiday.

• There will be no trash or recycling collections on Monday due to Columbus Day. The "Monday and Thursday" kitchen refuse will be picked up on Tuesday, Oct. 15 and Thursday, Oct. 17. The "Tuesday and Friday" collections will be on Wednesday, Oct. 16 and Friday, Oct. 18. More details here.

• Harrison Apar Field of Dreams Foundation, Yorktown Athletic Club, Yorktown Chamber of Commerce will host the Harrison Apar YAC Yorktown Chamber Golf Classic on Monday, Oct. 14. Yankees 1978 World Series MVP and Playoff Hero Bucky Dent will spend all day at the golf classic. He will play with foursomes, sign autographs, pose for photos, chat with guests. • Parents and guardians are invited to the First annual 'Elementary Math Night' in the Lakeland Central School District on Wednesday, Oct. 16. The evening's events will begin at 6:30 p.m. in Cafeteria A at Lakeland Copper Beech Middle School. More details here.
  

• The Lakeland Board of Education will hold its regular business meeting on Thursday, Oct.17 at 7:30 p.m. in the George Washington Elementary School, 3634 Lexington Avenue, Mohegan Lake. The meeting is open to the public and there are two opportunities for public comment. 
  

• Voice actor Alan Sklar will host a live reading of his favorite short story by Ernest Hemongway called "The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber." The reading will be held at the Somers Library from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. The story has been acclaimed as one of Hemingway's most successful artistic achievements. More details here.
