After 26 years teaching Enrichment and remedial math at Primrose Elementary, Rosemary Bernstein is retiring. She has had a long and fulfilling career, which began in Brooklyn, where she taught for two years; then in Hempstead for four years and another 10 in West Hempstead.
"These three schools were Catholic Schools where I taught every grade level from 1-8," Bersteind said. "I was also an assistant principal in one of these schools."
Patch: How do you describe your experience in the Somers Central School District?
Rosemary Bernstein: I love working with the children which is why I chose to be a teacher 42 years ago. The children are cute, lovable and fun! It is such a joy to witness their excitement when learning something new and growing academically. I am thrilled to end my career working with my two building administrators, Haidee Anaya the Asst. Principal, and Katie Winters, the principal. They are both understanding, kind and professional.
Patch: What will you miss the most?
Bernstein: I will miss the excitement of witnessing children learn and will also miss the children for the reasons stated above. I will miss my colleagues who make this a fun place to work and to learn.
I will miss the secretaries and all of the goodies in the front office, the Teacher Assistants who support my program, the good friends that I have made here such as Paula Clinchy (the librarian) with whom I share an office, the goodness and the expertise of the teachers with whom I work. The people who work here make this a nurturing environment for our very young learners.
Patch: What are you looking forward to in retirement?
Bernstein: I look forward to playing more tennis and doing more ballroom dancing. I also look forward to reading and completing some projects in my house. The biggest perk will be the gift of time to spend with family and friends.
Patch: How do you feel looking back on your career in Somers?
Bernstein: I am pleased to have worked here. I am pleased to be a part of the Primrose Family.
