Sanctuary Golf Course Project Seeks Next Step of Approval

The owner of the Sanctuary Golf Course, which is located off Route 118 in Yorktown, is seeking an amended special use permit to allow him to continue to make changes to the golf and country club property. 

A public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 16 at the John C. Hart Memorial Library in Shrub Oak. 

"This would be the final aspects of the plan with respect to the first nine holes and the facilities – the catering and recreational facilities," said Al Capellini, a Yorktown resident and the applicant's attorney.

Thomas Sung, who purchased the property 11 years ago, has already renovated and shaped the first nine holes at the golf course. He had been previously approved for four tennis courts and two paddle tennis courts. 

The reason for his return for a public hearing now is to receive approval for one additional tennis court and one additional paddle court – changes he has made to the existing plan. 

The plan also calls for a retaining wall adjacent to the tennis courts, landscaping work at several area, a lighting plan and alternate access to the property from Locke Lane.

Sung would need to submit another plan for work on the rest of the nine holes on the site, Capellini said. 

The Sanctuary Golf Course, located down the street from Peter Pratt's Inn and Turkey Mountain Nature Preserve on 180 acres, was once known as the Locke Ledge. In addition to a golf course the property had a catering facility, which at one point was the site of a function for President Gerald Ford, who was the vice president at the time, Capellini said.

The public hearing will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at the town board meeting, which will be held at the John C. Hart Memorial Library in Shrub Oak.
