Ruina Zhang, who came to the United States in ninth grade as a shy and timid girl, is now at the top of her class at Somers High School.
It was not long before the now 17-year-old graduating senior displayed her academic excellence and amazing talent of playing the piano. During her time in high school she won numerous awards including The Most Outstanding Student in AP Chemistry, AP Biology and Honors Chemistry.
Zhang, Somers High School's salutatorian, recently received the New York State Senate Youth Leadership Recognition Award awarded by Senator Greg Ball (R, C, I – Patterson).
“Ruina has truly showed me what it is like to overcome adversity," Ball said. "She came to this country and within two years not only learned the language but was in AP English classes. I commend her for her dedication to her academics, community, and school. I wish her the best of luck in her future."
The Youth Leadership Recognition Award Program is designed to highlight and congratulate well-rounded students who excel academically and have exhibited leadership through extracurricular or volunteer activities.
Zhang has organized pajama drives for needy children, donated her own hard earned money to Nicaraguan children, and worked with Costa Rican girls during the summer.
At school, she is the co-president of Students Taking Action Today Club, the co-captain of the Girls Varsity Tennis Team, the resource officer of Somers math team and the editor of the school newspaper. She was one of 12 pianists in New York State selected to perform in the Piano Showcase concert in Rochester.
