Spotlight Your Mom, Book Drive at Yorktown High School, Citizens Emergency Response Team

Here are five things you need to know today, May 10.

1. Spotlight Your Mom

2. Book Drive at YHS to Donate to Local Hospitals

The ninth grade student class at is holding a children’s book drive to raise awareness and to collect books for RecoveReads, a local organization which donates books to local hospitals and coordinates volunteers to read to children while they are hospitalized. Founded by ninth grade student, class vice president and brain tumor survivor Grace Ring, RecoveReads has collected and donated hundreds of books to local hospitals, including Blythedale Children’s Hospital and the Hudson Valley Hospital Center.

New or gently used children's books, especially books for teens and pre-teens, may be dropped off in the box in the high school lobby through Friday, May 19.

3. Citizens Emergency Response Team (CERT)

Yorktown Police Public Safety Officer Larry Eidelman presented a plan to town board members on Tuesday to get community volunteers involved in helping during certain emergency or disaster situations. Volunteers would help operate the emergency shelter, distribute meals, and check on residents who may need special assistance. The volunteers will be covered by the town’s workers' compensation program.

4. Bloggers Wanted

We already have great bloggers on Yorktown Patch – local people who write about health, friends, family, hobbies, education and more. And we are looking for even more bloggers to share their thoughts, passions and hobbies with us. If you are interested, email me at plamena@patch.com

5. Slight Chance of Showers Today

According to the National Weather Service, there is a slight chance of showers before 9 a.m., then a slight chance of showers after 3 p.m. It is expected to be partly sunny, with a high near 66.
