YORKTOWN, NY — Yorktown residents should not have to worry about whether their garbage and recycling will be picked up before the long holiday weekend.

Yorktown Supervisor Tom Diana said in a post on the town’s website that he’s been able to arrange for five additional garbage trucks will be coming to Yorktown to make certain garbage and recycling will be picked up Thursday and Friday.

The additional trucks will replace — at least temporarily — the five garbage vehicles that were repossessed from Competitive Carting Corporation earlier in the week.

Diana said that two private carters who recognized the seriousness of the situation have agreed to provide the additional trucks and crews.

“Their willingness to assist our community will enable all pickups to be made thereby averting a potential health emergency as we enter the long holiday weekend,” he said.

“I am personally committed to working non-stop to bring a long-term solution to the issues created by the performance failures of our current contractor,” Diana said. “I appreciate the ongoing patience and understanding of our residents.”

Patch reached out to Competitive Carting for a comment on the updated situation, but there was no immediate response.

This is the third major disruption since Jan. 1 when Competiive Carting began serving the town of Yorktown.

The contractor struggled to get started in January, and in July, there was a disruption of service after the July Fourth holiday.
