Yorktown Fines Garbage Contractor For Collection Failure
The town's refuse and recycling staff drive around Yorktown each morning to document whether the garbage has been collected.

YORKTOWN, NY — Problems with the lack of garbage collection in the town of Yorktown are being addressed by leveling fines to the contractor.
The town fined Competitive Carting Corporation $59,500 for failing to properly collect household refuse and recycling in the first week of July.
Supervisor Tom Diana announced the fines at Tuesday’s Town Board meeting and vowed that the penalties will continue if Competitive Carting does not comply with its contract.

He said he understands the town’s frustration.
“I have it as well. My garbage doesn’t get picked up on time,” Diana said. “We’re all in the same boat, folks, and we’re working to correct it.”

The town’s refuse and recycling staff is documenting additional garbage collection failures. Each weekday at 5 a.m., the department’s staff drives along the previous day’s collection routes to determine how much garbage was not collected.
Town officials said documentation is important because it will establish grounds for terminating the contract with Competitive Carting if necessary, something Diana said is a possibility.
The contractor was hired in late 2022 to collect garbage after the previous trash hauler proposed a $2 million increase to its contract. It was expected the town would save taxpayers $1.5 million through Competitive Carting’s five-year contract.
The failure to collect garbage after the Independence Day holiday was the second major disruption since Competitive Carting began service in the town Jan. 1. The contract struggled to serve Yorktown’s households throughout January, town officials said.
Diana said that residents whose garbage has not been collected should call Competitive Carting at 914-477-5865 or submit an email to their website.
If the contractor doesn’t respond, residents should contact the town’s Refuse & Recycling Department at 914-245-4438.
