YORKTOWN, NY — A northern Westchester County food pantry is putting out a call for donations for the upcoming holidays.

The Community Food Pantry at St. Mary’s in Mohegan Lake said it needs turkey and ham donations for the holidays.

Pantry organizers said rising food prices and the greater demand for services are limiting the pantry’s ability to provide Thanksgiving and Christmas provisions.

Councilman Ed Lachterman said, because of the increase in families coming to local food banks, they are critically low on funds.

“Based on recent calculations for the holidays, buying turkeys, hams and other food for the holidays would consume up to 70 percent of St. Mary’s funds,” he said.

Lachterman said that most supermarkets will let consumers earn points for a free turkey or ham.

“We ask the public to consider donating these items to the food pantry,” he said. “There are a lot of people in need in our community.”

There are four food pantries operating in Yorktown, Lachterman said.

They are:

  • First Presbyterian Church Food Pantry, 2880 Crompond Road
  • Community Food Pantry at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 1836 Main St.
  • Westchester Korean Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1243 White Hill Road
  • Yorktown Community Help, 1974 Commerce St.
