A historic marker, which commemorates the French troops that camped in town during the American Revolution and fought to secure the independence of the United States, was officially unveiled on June 27 by Yorktown High School student and Girl Scout Troop 2921 member Abby Ferri.
It stands in front of the entrance to Freyer's Florist on Route 202, which used to be Hunt's Tavern where the French Army stayed in 1781 and 1782. During that time, the area was busy with the troops which were stationed all around.
"It educates the community about history," Ferri said of her project, which she completed for her Girl Scout Silver Award. "We're walking the ground where historic figures have walked."
In order to erect the marker, Ferri did her research about the history of the area, held fundraisers to be able to afford the marker and helped design it. The Yorktown Historical Society contributed money for half of the cost of the $500 historic marker, Ferri said.
"I've always loved history," Ferri said. "I'm so excited. It's so unreal."
Freyer's Florist owners Anna Freyer, Darlene Freyer-Embury and Linda Sialiano were on hand during the unveiling of the historic marker.
"We're very proud and honored that Abby chose our building to be recognized as a historical site," Freyer-Embury said.
