YORKTOWN, NY — Girl Scouts in Yorktown are promoting the organization’s slogan — Make new friends, but keep the old —by commissioning buddy benches at municipal swimming pools in Yorktown.

Not only are the scouts promoting friendship but they are also promoting recycling.

Troop 2658 recently dedicated its buddy bench at the Junior Lake Pool in Yorktown Heights, and Troop 2802 is in the process of installing its buddy bench at the Brian J. Slavin Aquatic Facility in Shrub Oak.

Both troops earned Girl Scout Bronze Awards by collecting 500 pounds of plastic film and bags that were recycled into the benches by Trex, a manufacturer of composite decking and other home-improvement materials.

Trex produced the benches through a national program that challenges groups to collect 500 pounds of soft plastics within a six-month period.

Yorktown Supervisor Tom Diana said the scouts deserve their Bronze Awards because they are reminding everyone about the need for kindness and friendship toward others.

“Our Recreations Department is honored to help these Girl Scout troops discover their power and ability to change the world with community projects,” he said.

Town officials and Troop 2802 will hold a dedication ceremony for the new buddy bench at the Shrub Oak pool at 5 p.m. Aug. 28.
