YORKTOWN, NY — The Yorktown park that was closed after a Christmas Eve sinkhole appeared has reopened.

Woodlands Legacy Fields reopened Saturday after the three-month closure.

Town Supervisor Tom Diana said Algonquin Enbridge, the company that had a gas line running through the park, did a “fabulous job” in restoring everything and doing their recuperative work to get the park as safe as it can be.

“And they have done that,” he said. “They’ve done an excellent job.”

As part of Enbridge’s safety monitoring, the company will conduct semi-weekly aerial patrols of the gas line right of way, monthly site visits and electrical resistance surveys to ensure that new sinkholes do not form.

Councilman Ed Lachterman said there was great work from all involved in getting everything together in a timely fashion.

“We had a drop-dead deadline of April 1,” he said. “Our baseball teams needed it.”

The sinkhole appeared Christmas Eve, town officials said.

After an analysis, Enbridge subsequently poured fill materials into it to make certain there was support for the pipeline.

Enbridge officials are scheduled to attend a Town Board meeting April 18 to report on their response.
