YORKTOWN, NY — The town of Yorktown’s garbage collector could be fined $1,500 a day starting Friday if it doesn’t pick up refuse left on sidewalks this week.

Town Supervisor Tom Diana sent a notice of default and cure to Competitive Carting Corporation, the company chosen by Yorktown in 2022 to be its contractor.

The notice informed Competitive Carting that it faces daily fines of $1,500 and the termination of its contract if the garbage collection disruption is not resolved.

Diana said the town began receiving reports of uncollected garbage this week.

He called the garbage left on the streets for the past few days “an unacceptable health hazard.”

“We met with Competitive Carting [Thursday] and they informed us that they will commit the necessary resources to meet their obligations,” Diana said.

He said the contractor told the town the uncollected refuse will be picked up by Saturday and collection should return to normal on Monday.

“If that’s not the case,” Diana said, “we will terminate their contract.”

This isn’t the first time there has been a problem with Competitive Carting in Yorktown.

In January, just after Competitive Carting began working in Yorktown, many town residents experienced disruptions in their normal garbage and recycling collections.

Town officials said residents whose garbage was not collected should call Competitive Carting at 914-477-5867 or submit an email on its website. If the contractor doesn’t respond, residents should call the town’s Refuse and Recycling Department at 914-245-4438.
