YORKTOWN, NY — Another wrinkle in the garbage collection woes in the town of Yorktown has happened.

Supervisor Tom Diana said, in a post on the town’s website, that five of the garbage contractor’s trucks were repossessed.

He said he was noticed of the situation late Monday night by the Yorktown Police Department.

“We had no warning whatsoever that this could possibly ever happen,” Diana said. “Clearly, we are at a breaking point.”

He said the town is exploring all options working to correct the situation immediately.

Diana said if Yorktown residents do not have their garbage and recyclables picked up they will be.

As you can imagine, this is an intolerable situation,” he said, “and the public has every right to be fed up, as I am along with the entire Town Board.”

Diana said he would keep the town informed and have further updates as they become available.

Patch reached out to Competitive Carting for a comment, but there was no immediate response.

In July, the town levied fines against Competitive Carting Corporation, the contractor, more than $59,000 in fines for failure to properly collect household garbage and recycling during the first week of July.

The town had been documenting garbage collection failures, since refuse was not picked up after the Independence Day holiday.

That was the second major disruption since Competitive Carting began service in the town on Jan. 1.

The contractor struggled to get started serving Yorktown’s households throughout January.
