Police Crack Down On Businesses Not Following COVID-19 Order

CHARLOTTE, NC — Charlotte police and state and county alcohol regulators are cracking down on businesses not following a statewide curfew on alcohol sales amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

On July 23, a local proclamation required restaurants and private clubs serving food and alcohol to close on site beverage consumption from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. in Mecklenburg County, the City of Charlotte, along with the towns of Davidson, Matthews, Mint Hill and Pineville. On July 31, a similar statewide order was put in place by Gov. Roy Cooper, who signed an executive order banning the sale of alcohol after 11 p.m.

Since that time, authorities have issued 22 citations and ABC violations to Charlotte metro businesses who were found to not be in compliance with the orders, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said Friday.

According to CMPD, law enforcement has visited about 289 businesses, of which about 217 held ABC permits to sell alcohol. The remaining businesses were gaming arcades, CMPD said.

"Every complaint is vetted for an appropriate response, and the vast majority of reports do not involve any activity that violates the order or proclamation," CMPD said in a statement. "For those that do, our efforts remain the same in that we work towards voluntary cooperation with each member of the community through education and conversations, only resorting to citations and/or arrests as a last-measure."
