• Iryna's Law aims to improve public safety — but it may deepen jail and health care strains (wfae.org) — A new state law tightening pretrial release rules is already straining Mecklenburg County’s Detention Center Central in Charlotte, where overcrowding and staffing shortages are growing concerns. Sparked by a fatal stabbing on the Charlotte light rail, Iryna’s Law could mean longer jail stays, higher county costs, and more mental health evaluations for people arrested here and across North Carolina.
   

• Man Killed, Two Officers Wounded in Police Shooting During Child Custody Exchange Near Charlotte – [your]NEWS (yournews.com) — Two Mint Hill police officers were wounded and a man was killed during a child custody exchange at an Edible Arrangements store in Mint Hill, a suburb of Charlotte. Authorities say the man opened fire on officers, who returned fire, and both injured officers are now in stable condition as investigators work to piece together what led to the shooting.
   

• California Leads The Nation In Gas Prices (thesfnews.com) — Charlotte drivers are seeing some of the lowest gas prices in the country right now, with Sam’s Club offering regular at about $2.19 a gallon. A national roundup compares that to much higher prices in California and other regions, underscoring how relatively affordable fuel is in Charlotte and nearby Clover, N.C., this December.
