When It Comes To Fitness, Charlotte Has Work To Do: Study

American Fitness Index ranked Charlotte as among the least fit cities in North Carolina and the nation.

CHARLOTTE, NC — The Charlotte metro is among the least fit cities in North Carolina, as well as the nation, according to a 2020 American Fitness Index annual report.

The study assessed 100 of the nation's largest cities in health behaviors such as exercise, health outcomes and community/environment networks. Charlotte ranked No. 67 overall in the rankings.

In the personal health behavior category, Charlotte ranked at No. 37, but when it came to community environment, the city came in near the bottom at No. 97. The Community environment category considered air quality index, bike score, farmers markets and parks for a total of its score.

Charlotte's overall rank, was lower than three other major cities in North Carolina. Durham was ranked No. 34, Raleigh No. 36, and Greensboro at No. 60. Winston-Salem was ranked as the least fit city in North Carolina at No. 70.

The nation's top 10 fittest cities are:

  3. Minneapolis, Minn.
  4. Madison, Wisc.
  5. San Francisco, Calif.

  8. Denver, Colo.
  9. Boise, Idaho
  10. Boston, Mass.
