Brown University student from Raleigh recounts sheltering-in-place amid mass shooting tragedy (wral.com) — A Brown University freshman from the Raleigh area describes barricading in her dorm for eight hours as police responded to a deadly campus shooting in Rhode Island. She’s a recent Leesville Road High School graduate, now focusing on healing while thanking former Raleigh teachers and others back home who checked on her during the crisis.
   

3. NC wins $200 million lawsuit against FEMA, Attorney General Jackson says (foxcarolina.com) — From Raleigh, Attorney General Jeff Jackson says North Carolina has won a $200 million lawsuit forcing FEMA to restore funding for the BRIC disaster-mitigation program. The ruling means long-planned projects to protect water systems and homes from flooding across the state can move forward instead of losing critical resilience money.
   

4. North Carolina schools see positive changes with new cellphone policies, governor's report says (abc11.com) — Raleigh-based state leaders say new cellphone restrictions in North Carolina classrooms are already boosting focus, social interaction, and behavior, including in Wake County schools. A new law that took effect January 1 requires every district to curb phone use, and early feedback from teachers and students across multiple counties points to better learning environments and fewer discipline issues.
   

5. Brown University student killed in mass shooting identified (providencejournal.com) — Raleigh-based outlets WRAL and The News & Observer report that Brown University freshman Kendall Turner, a Durham Academy graduate, is among the students injured in the recent campus mass shooting. Another student, Ella Cook of Alabama, was identified as one of the victims, as friends and community members share memories of her activism and involvement on campus and in her church.
