February is American Heart Month dedicated to creating awareness that heart disease is a leading cause of death for Americans and encouraging everyone to adopt healthy lifestyles. Being physically active, eating healthier foods, getting enough sleep, tracking blood pressure and cholesterol and practicing self-care are all things that can improve heart health. Staying up to date on all immunizations, including flu and COVID-19 vaccine, is also important.

At the Fargo Public Library, the sixth annual Northern Narratives 2022 writing project is accepting submissions of poetry, fiction and nonfiction writing through March 31, 2022. This project is for adults and teens age 13 and older. The Paws for Reading program is a monthly event for emerging readers and features animals from Therapy Pets of the Red River Valley. The next session is February 12th at 10 a.m. The “Get Smitten with Reading” Winter Reading Program for readers of all ages runs through March 6th. Participants can read to earn chances to enter prize drawings.
The September apartment vacancy rate in Fargo was 4.4%, down from 5.45% in 2020 and 9.33% in 2019. More than 600 new apartment units came online in 2021. The City issued building permits for 829 new multi-family housing units in 2021, down from 1,141 in 2020.

The Inspections Department will no longer be storing commercial plans with Record Keepers. If the public would like to retain commercial plans that may be stored with Record Keepers, contact the Inspections office and request the documents. A spreadsheet with the addresses of the stored plans will be made available under the Inspections link of the City’s website along with contact information to request the documents.
The Fargo Police Department recently had 14 members of the department complete a three-day in-person training for the First-Line Leadership training program, which is designed to meet the needs of current and aspiring sworn and civilian first-line supervisors. The program focuses on three elements of leadership – The Leader, The Follower and The Situation. By the end of this course, attendees have a set of strategies and tools to call upon when making decisions, inspiring followers and achieving organizational goals. In the last few weeks, the FPD Training and Development Unit has been attending career fairs at UND, Alexandria Tech, NDSU and NDSCS to recruit potential members for lateral transfers, job opportunities and upcoming Fargo Police Department Academies.
