📰 News we're reading

1. Stark County's Salvation Army Corps praise donors for generous support (cantonrep.com) — Canton families in need are getting toys and food this Christmas thanks to a strong outpouring of support for Stark County’s Salvation Army chapters, even as Red Kettle donations lag. Local leaders say generosity has surged through Angel Trees, Toys for Tots, and help from groups like Walmart Academy, allowing more than 2,200 children countywide to receive holiday assistance.

2. Stark Urban League helping level up careers through Navigator program (cantonrep.com) — A Canton-based career program run by the Greater Stark County Urban League is still placing residents in better jobs even after losing state funding, and the agency is now asking local supporters to help keep it going. Through its Navigator program, hundreds of people from Canton and Stark County have gained skills, cleared legal barriers, and moved into higher-paying, in-demand work that stabilizes families and strengthens the local workforce.

3. Canton debuts new $3.4 million building for traffic sign and paint department (cantonrep.com) — Canton has opened a new $3.4 million traffic engineering building on Regent Avenue NE, giving the city’s sign and paint division a modern, purpose-built home close to the main service center. The 12,000-square-foot facility replaces an outdated Cleveland Avenue garage, improves efficiency for maintaining 19,000 street signs and 120 miles of markings, and is designed for future expansion and added staff.

4. Newly Renovated CommQuest Women's Residential Treatment House Opens (whbc.com) — Women in the Canton area seeking addiction treatment now have access to a newly renovated CommQuest “Deliverance House” on the Recovery Campus, consolidating inpatient services on one site. The program has moved from its original Canton house to the upgraded Massillon facility, adding trauma-sensitive design, workout space, medication support, and accommodations for mothers with young children.

5. Local woman finds a new life — and business — in true connection, not drinking (whro.org) — A Navy wife who once drank heavily has built a thriving alcohol-free social business in Norfolk, Virginia, after confronting her addiction and completing treatment. She previously studied at Malone University in Canton where drinking wasn’t part of campus culture, and now organizes sober events that help others rediscover connection, wellness, and fun without alcohol.
