Ohio Connections Academy Recognizes Cincinnati Student

Star Student Award recognizes students for achievement in and out of the virtual classroom

Olivia Evans, of Cincinnati, was recently named one of Ohio Connections Academy’s (OCA) Star Students of the Month for March in recognition of her hard work and leadership in the online classroom.

Olivia, a fifth grader at the statewide online public charter school, was nominated by her teacher, Mrs. Brewer, because of her hard work and her determination to get good grades by becoming more thorough and following through with any feedback she receives from her teacher.

As a Star Student, Olivia will be presented a certificate recognizing her achievement and be profiled in Ohio Connections Academy’s student newsletter and on the school’s social media platforms. Each month during the school year OCA will recognize students in grades K through 12 who are excelling in the virtual classroom.

“The faculty, staff and members of the board at Ohio Connections Academy are proud to recognize students like Olivia and the commitment they demonstrate to our school and their community,” said OCA Superintendent Marie Hanna. “Each of our Star Students is a leader in the classroom and demonstrates an extraordinary commitment to learning – they truly deserve this recognition.”

Olivia came to Ohio Connections Academy in 2019 because her parents, Ashley and Brandon, wanted their daughter to be in a flexible learning environment where she can work at times that fit her individual schedule.

According to Olivia, she appreciates that she can do her schoolwork and move ahead if she needs to do something else during a weekday. She added that she most enjoys her science class because she can learn about animals, specifically sharks.

“What I like most about Connections Academy is that my teachers are really nice,” Olivia said, “and it allows me to sometimes wake up late and do something else before school.”

Virtual school is a great fit for a variety of students and each student is unique. Those who attend Ohio Connections Academy come from different backgrounds and choose full-time online school for various reasons. Some students prefer to take ownership of their education and benefit from the flexibility that virtual school offers, while others are looking for a consistent, safe learning environment.
