Ryan And Vance Will Battle For Ohio's Blue Collars

Congressman Tim Ryan handily secured the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate, while author and venture capitalist J.D. Vance — endorsed by Donald Trump — fended off Josh Mandel and Matt Dolan to emerge as the GOP's choice. This nationally watched Senate race will be a no-holds-barred battle for the blue collars who make up the heart and soul of this state.

Ryan quoted the late Sen. John Glenn, a revered figure in Ohio, and the pope in his primary night victory speech.

  • "John Glenn said: 'We are more fulfilled when we are involved in something bigger than us.' Pope Francis said: 'If you want happiness, give your life away.' That's this campaign. We are going to build a home for Ohioans whether they're Democrats, Republicans or independents, everyone is welcome in this campaign. ... We’re trying to build a future with our kids. It doesn’t come from hating each other. It comes from us looking at each other, and seeing Americans, fellow Americans, that are charged with the responsibility... of shepherding this democracy."

Vance mentioned his main opponent, Josh Mandel, in his victory speech. (On Sunday, Trump appeared to confuse Vance and Mandel in public remarks. "We’ve endorsed – JP, right? JD Mandel, and he’s doing great," Trump said.)

DeWine And Whaley Square Off For Governor's Office

Democrat Nan Whaley, Dayton's mayor, bested her Democratic primary foe and will face incumbent Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine this fall in the race for governor. Whaley is the first woman to be nominated by either major party to run for governor.

At his victory party Tuesday night, DeWine mentioned the "unborn," seizing on the interest in the fate of Roe v. Wade following leaked information that the Supreme Court appears intent on removing half a century of federal protection for abortion rights.

  • "This is an administration that focuses on the most vulnerable members of our society and that certainly includes the unborn. So it's something that we care very, very deeply about."

Whaley took on the skepticism that a Democrat could win the governor's office in an increasingly Republican-dominated state.

  • "Over the next six months, you're going to hear from a lot of folks in the media and talking heads saying this can't be done. They're going to say that Ohio's a red state and that Mike DeWine can't be beat, but starting today, we're going to prove them wrong."
