Fatal CMHA Police Shooting Video Shows Attack On Officer

1) Body camera video of a Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority police shooting shows a man throwing a punch at the CMHA officer at the Riverside Park Apartments. The officer responded to the attack with his Taser, but Maalik Roquemore, 32, kept coming. The officer repeatedly tells the man, "get away from me." The officer then drew his firearm and shot the man. The video was released Wednesday to the public. The officer, Desmond Ragland, has been on the CMHA police force for six months and is now on leave.

2) Cleveland Guardians pitcher Shane Bieber is finding himself in good company as he achieved his 50th win this week in only his fifth season in the Big Leagues. Tuesday night against the Kansas City Royals, he reached 800 strikeouts, joining Sam McDowell, Bob Feller, CC Sabathia, Trevor Bauer and Luis Tiant as Cleveland pitchers who reached the milestone by the age of 27 or younger. Bieber did so in 108 games, the second fewest in MLB history. Bieber his a three-time All-Star and 2020 Cy Young Award winner. Let's hope this season he adds "World Series champ" to his resume.

3) If you love "modern Mexican" cuisine, you'll want to try Paloma in Shaker Heights. The new restaurant is expected to open next week, according to dining correspondent Douglas Trattner. Paloma is owned by Zachary Ladner and Carl Quagliata, who are the brains behind Giovanni’s, Smokin’ Q’s BBQ and The Village Butcher. Along with chef de cuisine Kytana Bradley, Ladner and Quagliata plan to offer "smartly composed tacos starring unconventional meats and fillings."
4) Fights broke out after a football game between Cleveland Heights and Cleveland Benedictine high schools on Saturday, prompting police to deploy tear gas. The teams played in Euclid, where police say hundreds of teens failed to disperse after the game for more than an hour. Several fights broke out. “The females were punching, kicking and dragging each other in the middle of the road and impeding the flow of traffic,” according to a police report. “I deployed pepper spray in the general area and the females stopped fighting.” No arrests were made but a gun was found in the stands.
5) The new COVID-19 boosters formulated to fight the latest omicron variant will be available at Hillcrest and Fairview hospitals, the Cleveland Clinic announced Wednesday. Appointments are required. The vaccines will be here in mid-September. Patients who already have scheduled appointments may be able to get the new vaccine.
